Materials: Highly figured solid Australian lacewood body; solid bookmatched quartersawn spruce soundboard; solid one-piece mahogany neck with adjustable truss rod; solid ebony bridge and fingerboard; abalone peghead torch, diamond and snowflake inlays; Greven Tor-tis pickguard; herringbone binding and soundhole; gold Schaller 16X1 tuners.
Notes: Beginning his career restoring priceless vintage guitars for George Gruhn in the late '60's, John Greven has compiled an artist roster that spans from Roy Acuff to ZZ Top. Now based in Portland, OR, Greven has earned an internaitonal reputation for hand crafted instruments that capture the sonic intensity of the finest prewar flat tops.
This guitar is a striking example of his Model F guitar, a hybrid design similar to the Martin Jumbo, with a 0000 or M width body, combined with a dreadnought depth. Combining the tonal balance of an OM with the power of the D series, the Model F is ideal for the fingerstyle player, with its generous 1 13/16" width nut allowing ample room for the fingers of both hands to play freely. The extravagantly figured Austrailian lacewood body produces an open, powerful voice with exceptional depth and detail. The neck has a comfortable gentle "D" profile, with traditional Martin 45 style abalone inlays in the peghead and fingerboard. The soundboard is crafted of quartersawn bookmatched spruce of grain so tight as to virtually disappear to the eye in places, heavily interlaced with intense crossgrain silk, and finished in a particularly subtle vintage style shaded lacquer.
Accents include herringbone trim, grained ivoiroid binding and endblock wedge, Brazilian rosewood heelcap, and Greven's handmade vintage toroise pickguard. This example is in immaculate condition, free of pick, buckle, thumb or fingerboard wear, with smooth low action over freshly dressed vintage style fretwork. With a voice as dramatic as its looks, this exceptional guitar is a rare find indeed.
Setup: This instrument is strung with medium gauge bronze strings (.013-.056). The guitar will accommodate lighter or heavier gauge strings, according to preference. String action is set at 5/64" to 6/64" at the 12th fret, with moderate relief for acoustic playing with medium strings.
Note: moire pattern on soundhole purfling is digital artifact, does not appear on guitar.
