Notes: Since the debut of Gibson's ES-175 in 1949, the 16" cutaway archtop has been the workhorse of the journeyman jazz guitarist. One of the first to refine the concept was Jimmy D'Aquisto, who added the handsome Venetian cutaway and streamlined soundholes, while retaining the laminate body and built-in humbucking pickup for improved sustain and feedback resistance. Now, a current generation of players and builders have rediscovered the design, making the 16" electric jazz box an indispensable tool for the working pro.
One of D'Aquisto's first customers for his 16" electric was jazz legend Jim Hall. Some three decades later, Hall collaborated with prolific Brooklyn luthier Roger Sadowsky to produce this ultimate refinement of the working jazz box. Among other features, Sadowsky thinned the top and back plates for better acoustic response, and slimmed the body slightly, for enhanced comfort under the arm.
This rare guitar is from the very first year of production: designated the Signature model, it bears a copy of Hall's autograph in the peghead, and was produced only until 2006. Othefr early features include the elongated ebony pickguard, double lines of purfling next to the binding, and a distinctive royal blue hardshell case. The gentle D neck profile in particular is one of the most inviting we've played, and the solid ebony fingerboard board combined with the immaculately dressed fretwork make for an exceptionally nimble playing experience.
This gleaming example has been maintained in immaculate 100% original condition, without playwear, and shows particularly attractive flame maple throughout. The DiMarzio humbucker was designed to replicate the smooth response of Jim Hall's original Guild/DeArmond pickup as well.
A rare and striking instrument, from where all the excitement began. One only, call now.
Setup: This instrument is strung with medium gauge nickel strings. The guitar will accommodate lighter or heavier gauge strings, according to preference. String action is set at 4/64" to 5/64" at the 12th fret, with moderate relief for acoustic playing with medium strings. The action may be lowered or raised to your requirements with the adjustable bridge.
