Notes: Introduced in 1902, the 000 was the largest guitar to bear the CF Martin name, until the adoption of the D series in 1930. Originally designed for gut strings (some early 000 examples were built as harp guitars) the model didn't really take off until a steel string version was introduced the 20's, and championed by players like country pioneer Jimmy Rodgers. The original long 12 fret body was downsized in 1934 with the introduction of the 14 fret neck, but the old slot-head 000 never lost its popularity, as folk revivalists like Norman Blake fanned small reissues of the model in the mid-60's and '70's. As notables like Merle Haggard continued to discover the superlative bass response and balance of the elongated body, the 12 fret 000-28 was finally returned to regular production in 1999, with the debut of the VS series, almost a century after its introduction.
Understated and elegant, the 000-28VS is a faithful reissue of the highly prized version of the 1920's, with vintage correct appointments including the ebony pyramid bridge, herringbone trim, zipper backstripe, short diamond inlay pattern, nickel open-back butterbean tuners and grained ivoroid binding and heel cap. Finally, the longer dreadnought scale adds contemporary punch to the meticulous vintage appearance, and the generous 1 13/16" fingerboard is virtually unique in Martin's contemporary guitars.
At just 4lb 4oz, this handsome guitar is notably lightweight, with the slotted headstock contributing to its excellent balance in the lap or on the strap. The soundboard is bookmatched of quartersawn fine grained Sitka spruce, with extensive cross grain silk, and the rosewood body shows particularly even figure throughout. This wonderful example is one of just 99 produced in its model year, and has been carefully maintained, with only a few incidental lacquer nicks here and there. A short gap along the center seam has been soundly resealed, and the instrument is exceptionally resonant, with a deep clear voice, and smooth low action over a fresh high-precision setup, and a traditional gentle V profile neck.
The return of a beloved classic from Martin's Golden Age. One only, call now.
Setup: This instrument is strung with medium gauge bronze strings (.012-.054). The guitar will accommodate lighter or heavier gauge strings, according to preference. String action is set at 4/64" to 5/64" at the 12th fret, with moderate relief for acoustic playing with medium strings.
Case: Original black Martin plush lined hardshell case.
