Notes: From his workshop in Holiday, Florida, Tom DeVoe built hand crafted guitars for a small clientele of dedicated players, until his retirement some years ago. With a background in precision machining, DeVoe brought an innovative approach to his instruments, from his distinctive hex-key adjustable bridge to the deep Selmer style cutaway. Each instrument is built entirely by hand, and individually tap tuned. No more than ten instruments were completed in a given year. Best of all, Tom's commitment to the working player meant that his instruments combine superb playability with unbeatable value.
The guitar is constructed of highly figured tiger flame maple, and is fitted with all handmade ebony hardware. At 2 7/8" deep, the 17" X-braced body is just slightly shallower and easier to hold than many traditional models, and the neck profile is a gentle arc that nestles smoothly in the palm. At a mere 5lb. 7oz. in weight, the instrument is delightful to hold, with excellent acoustic volume, balance and an appealing musical voice. The Armstrong pickup provides flawless response, and the stealth thumbwheels offer unobtrusive control of volume and tone. All solid, all carved, all hand made, at a price many builders charge for plywood. An outstanding value in true hand built US made jazz guitar.
Setup: This instrument is strung with medium gauge nickel roundwound strings (.013-.056). The guitar will accommodate lighter or heavier gauge strings, according to preference. String action is set at 5/64" to 6/64" at the 12th fret, with moderate relief for acoustic playing with medium strings. The action may be lowered or raised to your requirements with the adjustable bridge.
Case: Original deluxe arched plush lined hardshell case.
