Notes: Introduced in late 1955, the Gibson Les Paul Special was the company's intermediate model between the Les Paul goldtop and the entry level Les Paul Junior. Originally offered with a single cutaway body, the Special was redesigned with double cutaways in 1958. Gibson's first double cutaway solid body guitar, the Special delighted players with unimpeded access to the uppermost reaches of the fingerboard. The 'limed mahogany' finish was also known as 'TV Yellow', as it was reportedly developed to display attractively on the black and white TV screens of the era.
Equipped with twin P-90 pickups and the wraparound stud tailpiece, the Special offered exceptional detail and sustain, and the solid mahogany body was significantly lighter that the maple topped Custom and goldtop. In addition, many players found the flat top 'slab' body more comfortable under the arm, including as we understand, Les Paul himself. Discontinued after barely three years of production, the double cutaway Special has remained the most desirable version of this classic model to this day.
This Historic VOS model is the most meticulously faithful reissue of this evergreen classic. Built with the long-tenon neck, aged nickel hardware, and true vintage nitro finish, the double cutaway body allows easy access to the uppermost frets. The neck profile is a gentle medium C slim taper neck, with smooth, low action over a fresh high-precision setup.
Lightweight and evenly balanced on the lap or the strap, the guitar is a joy to play, with powerful, brilliant P-90 soapbar single coil pickups. The instrument is in 100% original condition, and apart from a bit of pick scuffing on the guard, shows no other playwear. The original black Gibson logo hardshell case includes all original tags, inserts, and case candy, including the Certificate of Authenticity, cable, and embroidered leather strap.
This hard-to-find Custom Shop reissue was issued in very limited numbers, and has been unavailable for some years. A superb combination of classic features, in one gleaming instrument. One only: call now.
Setup: Trussrod tension and neck relief adjusted; bridge height adjusted; bridge compensation set; bridge wheels and tuners lubricated; fingerboard and bridge oiled; body and neck cleaned and hand polished.
