Notes: How blue are your blues? Here's an axe to match your bluest notes of all.

In 1994, noted collector Scott Chinery asked Jimmy D'Aquisto to build one of his super jumbo Centura models with a striking, ultramarine blue finish. Completed the following year, it would be the final guitar the celebrated luthier would complete in his sadly abbreviated lifetime.

Delighted with the outcome, Chinery was inspired to commission 22 of the world's most prominent archtop builders to join an unprecedented project, with only two guidelines. Like the Centura, the guitars had to have an 18" body. And they all had to be blue. Very blue indeed.

When complete, the Blue Guitar project would be the centerpiece of a 1997 exhibition at the Smithsonian Institution, featuring an all-star concert, and spinning off several full length books, articles, and video tributes. And some two decades later, in the spirit of that enterprise, one inspired player ordered the biggest guitar Heritage ever offered, in that same striking tint of the purest sapphire blue.

Handbuilt in Kalamazoo in the old Gibson plant, the Heritage Super KB is a tribute to one of the most influential guitarists of the 20th century. In a career spanning some seven decades, jazz legend Kenny Burrell has recorded with superstars from Dizzy Gillespie and Billie Holiday to John Coltrane and Oscar Peterson. Designed to the artists' own specifications, the Super KB echoes Burrell's famed '60s Super 400CES, with its generous 18" body, twin built-in Seymour Duncan Seth Lover humbuckers, and signature sharp Florentine cutaway.

Sharing the same materials and specifications as its Gibson cousin, the Super KB has the solid, hand graduated Sitka spruce top, inlaid ebony fingerboard, parallel bracing, and was built in Gibson's renowned former Kalamazoo workshop. And in an upgrade to the Gibson original, the Heritage has solid carved flame maple back and sides, in contrast to the laminated backs used on the Florentine S-400s of the '60s.

An elegant traditional jazz box, this big guitar has the warm, buttery voice characteristic of its generous super jumbo body. The extended Florentine cutaway allows unimpeded access to the highest frets, and the premium grade electronics are detailed and highly articulate. This spectacular instrument is crafted with an intensely figured tiger maple body and matching three piece neck, with an elegant D profile, and smooth, low action, with a fresh high-precision setup.

100% original, the guitar is free of pick, buckle, thumb, fret, fingerboard wear or checking, and apart from a few scattered nicks, has remained in wonderful condition. The Super Kenny Burrell model is already plenty rare, as Heritage discontinued its regular production over a decade ago at this writing. And an example in this eye-popping custom color has to be the rarest of them all. A one-of-a-kind creation, this custom Blue Burrell is a unique instrument, in a distinguished lineage of pro-quality handbuilt American jazz guitars. Rare, handsome, and an exceptional opportunity for just one lucky owner. Call now.

Setup: This instrument is strung with medium gauge nickel flatwound strings (.012-.052). The guitar will accommodate lighter or heavier gauge strings, according to preference. String action is set at 4/64" to 5/64" at the 12th fret, with moderate relief for acoustic playing with medium strings. The action may be lowered or raised to your requirements with the adjustable bridge.

Case: Original deluxe Heritage logo arched plush lined hardshell case.
