Notes: If you actually play guitar, rather than just accumulating them, you've undoubtedly watched with dismay as the price of luxury-class guitar models have skyrocketed into the stratosphere. Which is why we search diligently for those particular instruments that deliver peak performance at an affordable price. This is one of our favorites.
Our friend Harry Takemoto of Stringphonic Guitars has created a series of instruments inspired by some of the most iconic instruments of the 20th century. Simple and elegant in design, his Leroy model is a tribute to the popular Gibson ES-125TC thinline archtop of the 1960's, with its lightweight, fully hollow body, and beloved P-90 single coil pickup.
The Leroy updates the 60's classic with a featherweight, compact 14" body, an amazing 3lb 14oz in total, pounds lighter than the originals. The gently rounded Venetian cutaway is more demanding to build as well, and the plain slab-cut maple laminate body of the 125 is upgraded to an arched spruce top, highly flamed maple back and sides, and a solid ebony fingerboard, on a lustrous ribbon-figure solid mahogany neck.
This fine example is in mint condition, without apparent playwear, and sports a lovely ambered natural blonde true lacquer finish, and an art-deco Selmer inspired logo. The P-90 style pickup is hand wound with traditional 42 AWG wire over an Alnico III magnet, and is wonderfully faithful to the surprisingly vibrant acoustic voice of this little wonder. The action is low and smooth over fine medium jumbo fretwork, with a gentle C profile neck, and a fresh high precision setup.
With big box performance in an ultra-compact package, the Leroy is an ideal companion to the player on the move, and a true best buy as well. One only: call now.
Setup: The frets have been precision leveled, recrowned and polished; trussrod tension and neck relief adjusted; bridge height adjusted; bridge compensation set; string slots at nut and bridge inspected and recut as necessary; bridge foot contour inspected and fit to top as necessary; bridge radius inspected and recurved as necessary; bridge wheels and tuners lubricated; fingerboard and bridge oiled; body and neck cleaned and hand polished.
