Materials: Solid Adirondack spruce top; Honduras mahogany back, sides, and neck; solid Brazilian rosewood fingerboard and bridge, with compensated bone saddle; mother of pearl dot fingerboard inlays; bound top; contoured firestripe tortoise pickguard; ebony nut; adjustable truss rod. Relic Golden Age open back 3 on a plate tuners installed, original tuners included.
Notes: Now a legend among blues, ragtime and fingerpickers in general, Gibson's legendary L-00 model made its debut in 1932, and remained in the catalog until just after WWII. Mid-size between the petite L-0 and the Jumbo series, the L-00 has been prized for its combination of tonal balance and full throated volume.
Initially introduced with a solid black finish, the L-00 was offered with a Cremona sunburst option the following year, making this striking example one of the very first with the classic 'tea-cup' finish pattern. With its ultra-light construction, knife-edge braces, and stiff resonant soundboard, the L-00 pulled jumbo guitar projection from a comfy, compact body.
The factory order number dates this instrument to 1933, as listed in Spann's Guide, a copy of which is supplied with the guitar. The instrument weighs in at an astounding 3 lb. 9 oz. and simply floats on the lap or the strap. The deep Cremona sunburst finish is all original, with no overspray, and some hand applied spot lacquer touchup to the fairly extensive playwear on this well loved, and well played, prewar legend.
The signature firestripe tortoise guard and Brazilian rosewood bridge remain installed, with a newer compensated bone saddle for optimized intonation. The neck has a comfy light V profile, with smooth low action over fine high narrow fretwork in excellent condition. Neck angle and saddle height are both fine, and a pair of tight grainline cracks on the lower bout are both soundly cleated and resealed long ago.
With its feather-light construction, the guitar is effortless to hold, and the sound veritably explodes out of the body. With its generous 1 3/4 nut, the fingerboard is ideal for either finger or pick style, and the finely aged soundboard is deeply resonant from decades of vigorous play. Setup: This instrument is strung with light gauge bronze strings. String action is set at 5/64" to 6/64" at the 12th fret, with light relief.
