Notes: From a small-town music store in Klamath Falls, Oregon comes this remarkable find. Having closed shop almost 20 years ago, the owner has finally disposed of the last of his stock, including this crown jewel of a guitar. An original Gibson LG-2 from the immediate postwar era, this gleaming guitar has slumbered peacefully over six decades in the gentle Northwest climate, and has awakened in simply breathtaking condition.
One of Gibson's most popular flat top guitars, the LG-2 made its debut in 1942 and remained in the catalog for the next 20 years, until it was re-christened as the B-25 in 1962. Together with its blonde counterpart, the LG-3, these two models were the only smaller Gibson flat tops of their era built with an X-braced soundboard. With its ultra-light construction, tall skinny braces, and stiff resonant soundboard, the LG-2 combines compact size with jumbo guitar projection and sustain.
Though no factory order number is apparent, the gold "fat script" logo without banner would date this instrument to 1946, plus or minus a few months. With its deep Cremona sunburst finish in uncannily pristine condition, the instrument is almost entirely free of pick, buckle, thumb or fingerboard wear. Weighing in at a mere 3 lb. 9 oz, this guitar is all music: there's simply nothing to hold the sound back from the ear.
All original hardware is affixed, including the 3 on a plate open back tuners, small teardrop tortoise guard, and Brazilian rosewood bridge, which has been soundly reglued in place. A hairline back crack of about 2 inches has been immaculately cleated, and is all but invisible to the eye in the dark walnut finish. The neck has a traditional full C profile, with the generous 1 3/4" prewar nut, and has smooth low action over fine original narrow fretwork in immaculate condition. Instruments in this sort of time-capsule condition are rare enough, and ones with this vibrant a voice rarer still. Easy to hold, and thrilling to play, this little guitar is going to make one lucky player very happy indeed.
For safe transit to the purchaser, the guitar will be shipped in a new vintage style black arched plush lined hardshell case. The original softshell fiber case may be shipped separately at purchaser's option.
Setup: This instrument is strung with medium gauge bronze strings (.013-.056). The guitar will accommodate lighter or heavier gauge strings, according to preference. String action is set at 5/64" to 6/64" at the 12th fret, with moderate relief for acoustic playing with medium strings.
