The Style 18 is one of C.F. Martin's oldest designs, dating to at least 1857, and remained the firm's most popular motif throughout the 20th Century. The '0' body size appeared in the catalog as early as 1854, and may be even older, having been Martin's largest body size of the time. The mahogany back and sides appeared in 1917, and by 1935 the model was appointed with a rosewood fingerboard and bridge. A perennial favorite, the 0-18 has remained in uninterrupted production to this day.
Over fifty years since it left the Nazareth, PA factory, this handsome guitar is crafted of tonewood now finely aged over some five decades. Featherweight in construction, this elegant instrument tips the scales at a scant 3lb 7oz. Effortless to hold on the lap or the strap, the guitar has a clear, open voice only years of age and care can impart.
The body and neck are crafted of ribbon grained Honduran mahogany, with a bookmatched spruce top aged to a warm amber tone. Carefully maintained, the guitar has remained without pick, thumb or fingerboard wear, with fine original fretwork, and free of cracks or checking in its lustrous original nitro finish. Apart from a few scattered lacquer nicks, and a bit of buckle rash, the guitar shows few signs of play for its long career.
A fingerstyle delight, the guitar is notably sensitive to the pick as well, with a voice that is brilliantly vibrant and highly responsive. The neck profile is a gentle light vee, with smooth, low action over a solid rosewood fingerboard, with a fresh high precision setup. An original set of Grover H-100C tuners are factory installed as well, one of the firm's rarest models.
A favorite of performers from Elizabeth Cotten to Steve Howe and Muddy Waters, this compact classic offers Golden Era tone at a working player's price. One only: call now.
Setup: This instrument is strung with medium gauge bronze strings. The guitar will accommodate lighter strings, according to preference.
Case: Martin molded D size hardshell case.
