Notes: The Style 18 is one of C.F. Martin's oldest designs, dating to at least 1857, and remained the firm's most popular motif throughout the 20th Century. The 'Grand Concert' 00 body size originated in 1873 with a Style 28 guitar, and by 1898 the first 00-18 model made its debut. Redesigned in 1934 to it's current 14 fret configuration, the 00-18 was one of Martin's all-time best selling models. Discontinued in 1995, the model has only recently returned to regular production.
Over half a century since it left the Nazareth, PA factory, this handsome guitar is crafted of tonewood now finely aged over some five decades. Featherweight in construction, this elegant guitar tips the scales at a just 3lb 11oz. Effortless to hold on the lap or the strap, the guitar has a clear, open voice only years of age and care can impart.
The body and neck are crafted of ribbon grained Honduran mahogany, with a bookmatched spruce top aged to a warm amber tone. A true closet queen, the guitar has remained without cracks, pick, buckle, thumb or fingerboard wear, with undented original fretwork. Apart from a few scattered lacquer nicks, the guitar shows few signs of play for its long career.
Ideal for fingerstyle play, the guitar is notably sensitive to a pick as well, with a voice that is brilliantly vibrant and highly responsive. The neck profile is a gentle light vee, with smooth, low action over a solid rosewood fingerboard, with a fine high bone saddle, fresh neck set, and a high precision setup. An upgrade set of Schaller M-6 tuners are installed as well, with a 14:1 gear ratio for smooth, precise tuning.
A favorite of performers from Nanci Griffith to Dave Alvin and Tim O'Brien, this compact classic offers Golden Era tone at a working player's price. One only: call now.
Setup: This instrument is strung with medium gauge bronze strings. The guitar will accommodate lighter strings, according to preference.
Case: Original Martin black hardshell case with orange plush lining.
