Notes: For over a half century, James Goodall has built some of the finest acoustic guitars available anywhere. Starting in the early '70's in his native Southern California, Goodall honed his craft as part of a group of young builders who became mainstays of modern lutherie: Taylor, Deering, Stelling, and Breedlove among them. After a sojourn in Hawaii, Goodall is based in Ft. Bragg, CA, maintaining his uncompromising standards of craft with a highly systematic approach to materials and design. Like a fine archtop builder, Goodall hand graduates the thickness of his soundboards to optimize the balance of fundamentals and harmonics. The result are instruments of surpassing acoustic response, with an excellent balance of sensitivity and headroom.
This guitar is an example of his popular Concert Jumbo series, with a comfortable body size positioned between the Standard and Grand Concert models, combining a curvy jumbo width body with a dreadnought style depth. This design combines the clarity and definition of the smaller body with the enhanced bass response of D style guitars, and the solid bookmatched bearclaw Sitka spruce soundboard adds advanced shifted X bracing for greater sustain.
At just 4lb 12oz, the guitar is notably lightweight for a jumbo guitar, and balances easily on the lap or the strap. Ideal for both finger and pick style play, the GCJ has a comfortable light "D" profile neck, and a wonderfully balanced, open voice with warm, smooth resonance. Trim accents include curly Koa headplate, abalone trim, and Gotoh tuners, the smoothest around. This example is in showroom condition, free of playwear or checking, with smooth low action over fine original fretwork, and a fresh high-precision setup. Setup: This instrument is strung with medium gauge bronze strings. The guitar will accommodate lighter or heavier gauge strings, according to preference. String action is set at 4/64" to 6/64" at the 12th fret, with light relief.
