Notes: From his workshop in Cognac, France, Maurice Dupont has been one of the pre-eminent builders of the gypsy guitar revival, and his instruments remain among the most beloved recreations of the original Selmers made today. A rare and eyecatching example of his work, the MC-8 1/2 is a striking rendition of Mario Maccaferri original 'grand bouche' model of the early 30's.
Lightweight and resonant, the instrument is built with a simply staggering striped Macassar ebony laminate back and sides, as well as the solid bookmatched French spruce top. Resonant and well balanced, the guitar weighs in at just 2 kg (4lb. 6oz .) and the voice is deep and clear, with excellent volume and projection.
The neck is carved of solid figured walnut, with a wonderfully comfortable D profile, slim in depth and nicely flattened across the back. The instrument has been maintained in outstanding condition, with all original hardware and finish, and is remarkably free of pick, buckle, thumb or fingerboard wear. Apart from a few scattered lacquer nicks, the instrument shows few signs of play altogether.
Whether or not this unique model was named after the surrealist 1963 film by Federico Fellini, it's certainly every bit as dramatic in appearance. The MC-8 1/2 is one of Dupont's rarest models, and to the best of our knowledge has not been offered in many years. A true showstopper, every bit as vibrant in tone as it is in appearance. One only: call now.
Setup: This instrument is strung with light gauge silvered steel strings. The guitar will accommodate lighter or heavier gauge strings, according to preference.
Case: Original deluxe black fitted plush lined hardshell case.
